Sprint: Sorry, We Don’t Have Any HTC Evo 4G Phones To Sell

Here’s what it says on the Sprint (S) Web site if you attempt to buy the HTC Evo 4G, the company’s first phone that uses the Clearwire (CLWR) WiMax wireless network: there aren’t left.

Or more precisely:

Sorry, this device is so hot we cant keep it on our virtual shelves.

Check back later more are on their way!

While the popularity of the phone is a good sign, the Wall Street Journal notes that the shortage is eating into the company’s first-to-market advantage with 4G mobile service, which is months ahead of comparable service from Verizon Wireless (VZ, VOD) and AT&T (T) using an alternative technology called LTE. Sprint CEO Dan Hesse admitted the issue in an interview with the Journal, conceding “”We thought we would have more of a head start than we’ll end up having.”

HTC blames the tight supply of the Evo on component shortages, which apparently includes the touch screens the company buys from Samsung.

The Journal says that according to the investment firm Macquarie Group, Sprint has sold 300,000 Evo 4G phones to date.
