Apple iPhone Beats Samsung By a Nose in Q4

Apple’s (AAPL) iPhone becomes the new champ in smartphones for the December quarter, according to reports this morning from Strategy Analytics and IHS iSuppli, after Samsung Electronics (SSNLF) came in a close second, with the two vendors delivering 37 million to 36.5 million smartphones, respectively.

The analyses by both firms followed Samsung’s report of its Q4 results, early this morning.

Strategy Analytics heralded the fact in a press release this morning that notes that Smartphone sale rose 54%, year over year, in the fourth quarter.

Samsung was the top vendor for the year, with 97.4 million units versus 93 million for Apple, the firm said. iSuppli had a slightly lower number for Samsung in its press release, at 95 million.

Because Samsung does not specifically break out its smartphone sales, both firms are making estimates.

Nokia (NOK) had just under 20 million in the third quarter, and for the year, it dropped to third place, with 77.3 million units, after being tops in 2010 with 100.1 million units.

In a separate release, Strategy Analytics noted that the total number of handsets shipped last year, including both smartphones and simpler types of devices, rose by 14%, to 1.6 billion. In that context, Apple came in with 6% of the global handset shipments in 2011, behind Nokia’s 26.9% and Samsung’s 21.1%.

Samsung’s ordinary shares traded in Korea rose 12,000 Korean Won, or 1% to 1.125 million Won. Apple shares are up 53 cents at $445.16.
