Top 10 Blue Chip Stocks To Invest In 2014

LONDON -- The shares ofAstraZeneca (LSE: AZN  ) (NYSE: AZN  ) added 6 pence to 3,359 pence during early London trade this morning after the company said it will write off $140 million following the outcome of a product trial.

The FTSE 100 member confirmed the charge related to the development of fostamatinib, an oral treatment for rheumatoid arthritis, and would be taken in the second quarter.

AstraZeneca said the results from a phase 3 test program, alongside data reported previously from earlier trials, had prompted the company not to proceed with regulatory filings for the product.

The blue chip also claimed that hypertension, diarrhea, nausea, headache, and nasopharyngitis were among the treatment's most commonly reported side effects.

AstraZeneca said it would now return the rights for fostamatinib toRigel Pharmaceuticals.

Briggs Morrison, managing director, executive vice president of global medicines development and chief medical officer at AstraZeneca, said:

China's fellow BRIC member, Russia, comes in as even cheaper, with an average P/E of just 6. That's a cheaper valuation than any member of the Dow currently; the closest blue-chip stock to Russia is Chevron (NYSE: CVX  ) , which sports a P/E of 8.9. Coincidentally, one of Chevron's biggest global rivals has become one of Russia's brightest companies: Russian state-owned oil major Rosneft became the largest publicly traded oil company in the world in March after purchasing TNK-BP, outstripping Chevron and fellow energy rivals in size.

Yes, oil prices fell 7.5% across the globe, and yes, Chevron's (NYSE: CVX  ) earnings dropped 4.5% in the first quarter, yet shares still added 1.3% today after the energy giant reported. While oil production slipped, increased traction in the natural gas business showed some promise, as natural gas sales rose 3.2%.

It would sure look responsible for a big integrated energy company like XOM or Chevron (CVX) to acquire the leading provider of environmental, energy and industrial services in North America. The company serves a diverse customer base, including a majority of the Fortune 500 companies, thousands of smaller private entities and numerous federal, state, provincial and local governmental agencies.

Operations in the deepwater will also benefit as time passes from a technological development called dual-gradient drilling, or DGD. The new advancement is largely the child of Chevron (NYSE: CVX  ) , and it clearly will benefit the second-biggest U.S.-based oil and gas major.

McDonald's (NYSE: MCD) joined the New York Stock Exchangeon July 5, 1966. The burger chain was a recent entrant to public markets, as its IPO had taken place only 14 months earlier. By the time McDonald's joined the Dow Jones Industrial Average (INDEX: ^DJI) 19 years after graduating to the Big Board, a single share worth $32.25 in 1966 had grown into 27 shares worth $1,800.

Dell Inc. (NASDAQ: DELL) posted its highest-ever share of the global server market — 18.8% — as competitors International Business Machines Corp. (NYSE: IBM) and Hewlett-Packard Co. IBM (NYSE: IBM  ) probably ranks as the most significant publicly traded rival to Accenture in the health care field. While Big Blue doesn't report revenue for health care, the industry is an important area of focus for the company. In 2011, IBM counted more than 8,000 staff dedicated to health care. That number is likely a good bit higher now.

  • [By Matt Thalman]

Furthermore, the Dow's most heavily weighted stock, IBM (NYSE: IBM  ) , lost 1.11% this week. Combine that with all the Dow's losers this past week (the others were Alcoa, Intel, and Coca-Cola), and you get an index weighting of 26.17%. But with no weighting, seven stocks out of 30 would account for just 23.33% of the index.

There's been an awful lot of talk over the past few years about how badly Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL  ) and China Mobile (NYSE: CHL  ) need each other. 路 Dell (DELL)

    路 Yahoo (YHOO)

    路 Research In Motion (RIMM)

The least loved of these is of course RIMM. Einhorn already has a paper loss in that stock. His average cost was $18.88 a share. Today price is $15.05. That a 20% loss. And Einhorn only started buying Research In Motion in the last three months of 2011.

But Research In Motion is a pretty small position 0.81% of Einhorn total portfolio compared to one of his other new buys: Dell.

Einhorn already owns $255 million of Dell shares. He paid $15.36 a share. The stock is now at $18.08 a share. That an 18% gain. And Dell will mean a lot more to Einhorn performance than Research In Motion. Dell is a 3.9% position for Einhorn. That almost five times the size of his investment in Research In Motion. So for now at least Einhorn paper gain on Dell will more than make up for his paper loss on RIMM.

    Finally, there Yahoo.

This is a quasi-new buy for Einhorn. He actually bought a 8.5 million shares of Yahoo in the first quarter of 2011 only to sell them for a 2% loss the next quarter. Einhorn was out of Yahoo completely for the third quarter of 2011. And now he back in with about 3 million shares bought in the fourth quarter of 2011. Einhorn average price is a wee bit lower this time. His original purchase price back in first quarter 2011 was $16.64 a share. He got his Yahoo shares about 6% cheaper this time around. Einhorn paid $15.66 a share for his 3 million shares of Yahoo. The stock is down a smidge from there. Around $15.25 a share.

There have been reports of a breakdown in Yahoo buyout talks. But that par for the course in a situation like this where a company is shopping itself around. There will be lots of people leaking stories for lots of different reasons. Don believe everything you read about Yahoo. And certainly don try to tra

Alamy Companies can make brilliant moves, but there are also times when things don't work out quite as planned. From an underwhelming iPhone event to Pandora's new CEO, here's a rundown of the week's best and worst moves in the business world. Apple (AAPL) -- Loser Shares of the consumer tech giant had rallied heading into Tuesday's iPhone event, but the love didn't last. The stock began to sell off while Apple was still presenting its updated smartphones. There were no smartwatches, no high-def smart TVs, and no magical unicorns offered up at the presentation. The market was also unimpressed to find that the cheaper iPhone that everyone was hoping would make inroads into Android's 80 percent global market share wound up being just $100 cheaper than the new iPhone 5s. Apple only updates its iPhones annually, so it was also a letdown to see the company once again fail to produce phones with screens larger than four inches. Yes, Apple is spicing up the shell colors across both new iPhone lines, but the actual screens are too small compared to the larger Android devices that many consumers are choosing these days. Pandora (P) -- Winner The leading music streaming service had been searching for a new CEO for months, and it finally found one. Brian McAndrews -- who at one time ran digital marketing powerhouse aQuantive before selling it to Microsoft (MSFT) in a $6 billion deal -- will take control of the leading media platform that serves up 1.35 billion hours a month to its more than 72 million active listeners. It's a smart hire. Pandora didn't need a big terrestrial radio guru. Pandora isn't about content programming. It already has the technology in place that serves up timely music recommendations and adapts to a listeners preferences. Pandora's major challenge remains to monetize its growing airplay, and that's where McAndrews is the perfect fit for a fast-growing company that's just starting to impress marketers. It's one of the steadiest dividend payers on the market, and it's continuing to fly level. Colgate-Palmolive (NYSE: CL  ) has declared a fresh quarterly common stock dividend, which is to be $0.34 per share, paid on August 15 to shareholders of record as of July 23. That amount matches the firm's previous distribution; this was paid in May. Prior to that, Colgate-Palmolive handed out $0.31 per share.

One concern, though, is how the company handled news of Venezuela's currency devaluation. Clorox (NYSE: CLX  ) and Colgate-Palmolive (NYSE: CL  ) also felt the pinch, with Clorox taking about a $0.05 to $0.10 per-share earnings hit and Colgate losing about $0.50 per share. But they also addressed the potential devaluation more proactively than P&G did. Clorox actuallyanticipatedthe devaluation in its February earnings report, projecting the potential hit if a devaluation took place. Colgate didn't provide specific guidance in advance but clearly saw it as an issue, delivering on a promise to give prompt guidance revisions after the devaluation occurred.

The company麓s plan is to introduce new packaging, new blends and other line extensions. A key driver of the company is the strong market share and the economies of scale.
