Intuit Suffers Massive Web Outage To Tax, Accounting Sites

Intuit (INTU) late Wednesday was trying to restore service to its Web sites after a massive outage that began on Tuesday. As the Wall Street Journal notes, consumers and small businesses that rely on the company’s services were left without access to Intuit’s accounting and tax software. The Journal notes that Intuit has previously estimate it has more than 300,000 online customers.

A visit to Intuit.com late Wednesday found the following message where the Web site is supposed to be:

Sorry! This Intuit service is currently unavailable.

We apologize to customers who are unable to connect to a number of Intuit websites that became unavailable at about 7 p.m. Pacific time Tuesday. Our first priority is to restore these websites and give customers full and complete access to our sites and their data as soon as possible. We are also investigating the cause of the problem and taking measures to prevent a recurrence.

We appreciate our customers patience and will provide more information as it becomes available.

On an online forum for customers, the company said it has begun to restore some services:

We’re beginning to restore all affected Intuit websites and services. Customers already have access to some sites and we’re continuing to work toward full restoration. Our preliminary investigation indicates the outage occurred during a routine maintenance procedure Tuesday night. An accidental power failure during that procedure affected both our primary and backup systems, taking a number of Intuit websites and services offline. While power was quickly restored, we’re working diligently to validate our systems and bring them back into full operation.

We apologize for disruptions we’ve caused and understand the importance of our services to our customers. We will continue working nonstop until all affected websites and services are fully restored.
