Russian police killed four militants in the North Caucasus republic of Dagestan last week, according to local media reports.
The militants opened fire as law enforcement officers stopped their car to check their documents late Thursday, according to the RIA Novosti news agency.
A local spokesman said that our people were killed in return fire, adding that guns and a grenade were also found at the scene.
Violence is common in Russia’s mainly Muslim North Caucasus republics, especially in Chechnya, Dagestan and Ingushetia, with militants frequently targeting police and officials representing the Russian authorities.
Moscow has pledged to wage a ruthless fight against militant groups while also vowing to tackle the problems of unemployment, clan rivalry, and corruption, which are viewed as reasons for violence in the region.
